Whether a child is intelligent or not does not always have anything to do with poor school performance. In order to help a teenager get better grades at school, you first need to find out what is behind the poor performance so that the problem can be addressed and, if possible, eliminated. What could be the reasons behind young people's poor grades at school?

Sleep deprivation

Around a quarter of all pupils have fallen asleep at school at some point. An adolescent needs at least eight hours of good sleep at night, but in the discovery phase of a teenager, sleep often comes up short. Lack of sleep inevitably leads to poorer physical and mental performance. It is important to go to bed at the same time every night to get a healthy sleep rhythm. Caffeinated and sugary drinks should be avoided in the evening to make it easier to fall asleep.

Family problems

Problems within the family have a very strong influence on a teenager's life. Frequent arguments with siblings or parents or the death of a pet can distract the teenager from concentrating on homework. Many teenagers also suffer from the burden of a divorce or separation of their parents.

Too many hobbies

Extracurricular activities should not take up all of a teenager's free time. Teenagers also need time just for themselves. Many teenagers divide their free time between sports, clubs, meetings with friends and part-time jobs, so that school takes a back seat.

Entertainment

Due to the strong influence of electronic devices, many teenagers spend too much time in front of the television, on the computer, with the games console or mobile phone. The recommended amount of time a teenager should spend each day is two hours. It's okay to spend more time, as long as it's used constructively.

Lack of interest

When teenagers go through a rebellious phase, school is of little importance to them. They make no effort to perform well. This is usually a form of rebelling against authoritarian role models. Even if a young person should be encouraged to get good grades, they should not be forced to do so. Instead of threatening harsh punishments, the promise of rewards often achieves more. In this way, the young person makes the conscious decision to make an effort at school and does so voluntarily.

Learning disabilities

It is also possible that a young person suffers from a previously undetected learning disability. They can easily act stupid among their classmates because they find certain subject areas difficult. Learning disabilities can make it difficult for them to read, write and apply information. The earlier such a learning disability is recognised, the better the young person can be helped so that they suffer less from the pressure to perform in comparison with their classmates.

Kinder können im Teenageralter schwierige Phasen durchleben, die sich durch schlechte Noten in der Schule widerspiegeln.
