Aphasia is a speech disorder caused by brain damage, for example due to Alzheimer's disease or a stroke. This makes communication with healthy people difficult. Here are some tips on how to talk to people with speech disorders.

1. patience is important. Trying to rush people does not help at all.<\/p>\n

2. say only one thing at a time. Trying to discuss several concepts at once leads to confusion and frustration.<\/p>\n

3. avoid disturbing background noises. These have a distracting effect.<\/p>\n

4. be relaxed and natural, so the aphasic person does not feel pressurised.<\/p>\n

5 Summarise again. Recap briefly at the end of what has been said to make sure that both have understood.<\/p>\n

6 If you have not understood something, it is wrong to pretend to understand it. It is better to talk about it again patiently.<\/p>\n

7. take paper and pencil and write down words for better understanding, so there are no misunderstandings.<\/p>\n
