Toads are popular among amphibian keepers because they look pretty and are quite easy to care for. How do you care for a toad properly?

Toads are nocturnal animals that hide during the day. Usually they do not like to be touched. It is also not recommended to touch a toad with the bare hand, because human skin oils can cause irritation and inflammation in the toad.<\/p>\n
A toad should be kept in a terrarium that holds at least 60 litres. The bottom should be covered with five to ten centimetres of chlorine-free water and changed once a week. To create as natural a habitat as possible for the toad, the terrarium should be furnished with stones, soil, grass and foliage. Tree bark and other natural wooden parts can serve as hiding places. The terrarium must have a lid so that the toad does not jump out.<\/p>\n
Toads eat flies, spiders, moths, crickets and other small insects. Crickets should be fed mainly. As a rule, three to six insects every two days are sufficient for an adult toad. A toad that is still growing should be fed small insects supplemented with a vitamin supplement once a week.<\/p>\n
The temperature of the terrarium should be kept between 20 and 25 degrees and have a humidity of 60 to 80 percent. Toads need water to cool down occasionally, so the bottom must have water deep enough at one point that the toad can bathe in it, but not completely submerged. An aquarium heater can be used to maintain the correct temperature. Never use chlorinated water, as chlorine is harmful to toads.<\/p>\n

Remove excrements regularly.
Toads do not tolerate noise and bright light; the terrarium should not be placed in direct sunlight.<\/p>\n
Due to spores and fungi in the water, toads occasionally suffer from fungal infections. These can be recognised by reddening of the skin, changes in colour, ulcers and mucous secretions.
