The coffee plant grows in subtropical Africa, South America, South Asia and the Caribbean, but originally the plant comes from Ethiopia. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, of which there are about ten different species.<\/p>\n

The coffee plant grows as an evergreen shrub or as a small tree that can grow up to 5 metres tall if it is not pruned. The leaves of the plant are dark green and shiny and are ten to fifteen centimetres long and six centimetres wide.<\/p>\n

The coffee plant has white flowers from which the fruit develops. <\/p>\n

The berries are oval and about one and a half centimetres long. They are initially green when unripe and red when ripe. Almost every berry contains two seeds, about 10% of the berries only one. The berries ripen over a period of seven to nine months.<\/p>\n

The ripe berries of the coffee plant are picked and the seeds are removed by soaking the berries in water. The seeds are then dried. The seeds are known as beans. During the roasting process, the chemical composition of the bean changes, which is why the flavour of different roasts varies. After roasting, the coffee is ground and brewed as a drink.<\/p>\n
