However, there are hidden traps that lead to waste instead of saving money. To save money wisely, you have to shop smart.

It's often cheaper by the dozen. This makes sense for foods that have a long shelf life and are part of the basic equipment in the pantry. However, it becomes wasteful if you use more because you have enough in the cupboard, or if the food goes bad because you can't use it up in time. After all, you don't want to eat the same thing every day.

Those who write their shopping list according to the current offer brochure should not be seduced. Not everything in the brochure is reduced in price. Often, this draws attention to certain products without making them cheaper.

The supermarket's own brand is not necessarily the cheapest choice. To compare prices, check the price per kilo or litre.

It is not necessarily advantageous to stick strictly to the shopping list. At least a certain amount should always be planned on it for spontaneous purchases. Often you miss out on good deals because you only go by the list. If you always calculate some money for possible offers, you can take the bargains with you and still follow the shopping list.

You don't necessarily save money by pre-planning your weekly meals. The other way around is cheaper. You buy staple foods along with what's on sale and then plan meals from what you have on hand.

Packaged meat is not always cheaper than fresh meat. Especially towards the end of business hours, fresh cuts can be snatched up cheaply at the butcher's.
The same applies to fresh fruit and vegetables. There are often good deals at the weekly market because seasonal produce is sold there. Those who come towards the end often buy a lot for little money. Even if the juiciest fruits are already sold out, there is still plenty on offer.

A typical trap is when different supermarkets bring out offers on different days of the week. If you go to more than one supermarket, it immediately tempts you to buy because "you've just been here". It is better to limit yourself to one supermarket and always go shopping on the same day, namely the day when the offers start.

Buy healthier and still save money: You don't have to give up organic food to save money. Even if white flour products are cheaper, you eat more of them. It often pays to buy the wholemeal variety because you get full faster. Beans and potatoes are among the cheapest foods, and also among the healthiest. So you can buy a lot of them and eat cheaper and healthier at the same time.

Many goods come into the current offer because they don't have a long shelf life. So, unfortunately, it doesn't do much good to buy generously if you have to use it all up in a short time. When shopping, always look at the shelf life.

A lot of money can be saved when buying groceries every week.
