The Advent calendar began in its original form as a countdown to Christmas Eve at the beginning of the 19th century in Germany.

There were different types of Advent calendars, namely as a blackboard on which the days of December were written in chalk and crossed out every day, or more like an Advent wreath, where there were 24 candles and one more was lit every day. The first Advent calendar is said to have been handmade in 1851, while the first public Advent wreath, also known as an Advent clock, was hung in the prayer hall of the Rauhes Haus in Hamburg in 1839. However, the Advent wreath has been a tradition in German households since the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, there were printed Advent calendars in daily newspapers as a gift for readers.<\/p>\n

While there were various types of wall calendars, namely those with religious pictures behind each number or with a Bible verse, the first officially printed Advent calendar with little doors to open is considered to be the one produced by Gerhard Lang in 1908. As a child, his mother had drawn 24 numbers on a piece of cardboard and stuck a sweet (\"Wibbele\") on each number.<\/p>\n

The initially purely German tradition was popularised in the USA under President Eisenhower after the Second World War. As presents are opened there on 25 December, there are Advent calendars with 25 doors.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
