Through sport, children learn responsibility, coordination, self-confidence and co-operation. This is why it is so important for parents to help children develop their sporting skills and encourage their enthusiasm.

Aside from the important social value of learning to exercise, childhood obesity is increasing dramatically worldwide. Parents are therefore rightly concerned that their children get enough physical activity. Playful sports such as football, basketball or other team sports as well as rhythmic gymnastics or floor exercises are a good solution for children, which most of them also enjoy very much, provided they are not overtaxed.

Parents of children under the age of five are faced with the question of how they can give their children basic skills at such a young age so that they can develop into good athletes. Experts say that children are not born with sporting talent, but with a more or less pronounced affinity for sport. In order to develop the basic skills for sport, children need to be motivated to take part in sporting activities such as running, jumping, throwing and catching balls. Every child can become a good athlete through the proper development of the building blocks of sport. The key is to make sport fun and not force the child to do it. Children can achieve higher levels of performance in all things if they learn voluntarily and with joy.

Children under the age of five can and should be supported in the development of the essential building blocks of sport, but at this young age through short, playful activities. Organised competitive sport is only conditionally suitable for children over the age of five. However, children who play ball, ride bikes, run and jump from an early age have the opportunity to develop excellent skills by the time they are old enough to participate in team sports.

Children who are too young do not yet have the mental capacity to deal with complex rules and strategies and the principle of winning and losing. If you watch a group of four-year-olds playing football, you will quickly realise that even carefully structured games are interrupted by outbursts of tears, frustration and anger. In addition, the attention span is still too short and the children are often distracted.
If a child is encouraged to take part in demanding competitive sport too early, the requirements for the sport are often beyond the child's abilities and the child does not fulfil the expectations. This leads to the child developing self-doubt as a result of their "failure" and quickly losing interest.
Paediatricians also say that participating in demanding sports at too young an age can lead to growth disorders.

Since the late 20th century, free, informal play for children has unfortunately too often been replaced by organised team or competitive sport at a young age in order to train children for sporting success at an early age. For children who are not yet emotionally and mentally developed enough, this often has a negative impact on their psyche. Instead of structured games, children should be allowed to play freely and informally.

Sports and activities for babies, toddlers and older children

Most parents agree that sport, especially team sport, can provide children with useful values for life.
