The language and expressiveness give the interlocutor an impression of the person and they influence the circle of friends and working life.

Good conversation skills often need to be developed and nurtured. Bad habits must be broken and the student must learn to find topics of conversation. Good conversation also requires good pronunciation, because slurred speech inhibits fluent communication.

A teacher who wants to teach students good conversation skills should focus on four areas: regular practice, non-verbal communication, gestures and manners, and clear pronunciation.

Regular practice

Practising communication promotes the development of conversation skills. For this purpose, two students are paired up and have to talk about topics that are interesting to both of them. The topics can be from the students' private lives, such as favourite music or fashion. At the beginning, it is often seen that students develop good strategies in conversational skills, but still appear stiff and artificial. This stiffness can be overcome through regular practice. To guide students in this process, the teacher should pair such students with those who are already loose and relaxed in conversation.

Nonverbal communication

Conversational skills include not only the ability to find topics of conversation, but also learning to listen carefully to the other person and to understand their body language. Non-verbal communication tools include eye contact, facial expression and tone of voice. As an exercise, the student should use non-verbal communication to express a hidden opinion of his/her words, which the interlocutor must interpret.

Gestures and manners

Good manners are an important part of conversational skills. For example, never interrupt or insult the person you are talking to. Forceful hand gestures such as the raised index finger must also be avoided. The teacher must make sure that students do not violate etiquette and call their attention to it if necessary.

Clear pronunciation

Many students are not aware that they do not have clear pronunciation. The teacher should have the student repeat each word that is not pronounced clearly. For practice, the teacher can have texts read aloud where the student reading aloud has to pay special attention to the sound of his or her words.
Pronunciation depends on the correct movement of the mouth. For an "f", the lower lip should visibly touch the front teeth of the upper jaw, etc. For "h" sounds, students can feel with their hand in front of their mouth whether air is actually coming out of the mouth.

Conversation and good pronunciation are crucial in social interaction.
