Feelings are part of a person's mood and personality. They stem from the individual perspective of a situation. People behave in a way that directly corresponds to their emotional state. The causes of feelings are not yet fully understood, but there are numerous theories on the subject of feelings.

What causes feelings

Theory of physical reaction

Since the end of the 19th century, William James has theorised that physical reactions are the key to a person's emotional state. According to this theory, feelings are caused solely by the actions of the individual. For example, a person cries and feels sad as a result.

The neurobiological theory

Mapping the nervous system shows that the brain of a mammal produces reactions that can be responsible for feelings. Hormones such as dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin trigger certain reactions in the body that we interpret as feelings.

The cognitive theory

This states that judgement and the evaluation of a situation are at the root of emotions. This happens either consciously or unconsciously. The general processing of information influences behaviour and feelings.

The theory of perception

While feelings are a physical reaction to external influences, the significance of the information received depends on the individual's perception. Changes in the body perceive certain situations as significant and the person reacts to them in a way that we call feelings.

The theory of affect-related events

Most scientists agree that emotions are based on communication with the environment. This theory assumes that certain events trigger certain physical reactions, which in turn influence inner attitudes and behaviour.

Control your feelings

What causes feelings and where do they come from?

Was verursacht Gefühle in uns: Der geistige und psychologische Zustand eines Lebewesens wird als Gefühl bezeichnet.
