What needs to be considered when keeping tortoises as pets in the nursery?

In principle, tortoises can be kept in any room of the house as long as they have a suitable enclosure. Tortoises need enough space to move around, daylight and fresh water and food at all times. Tortoises need a relatively large run and the right room temperature.

The turtle's enclosure should be well closed so that the turtle does not escape. Some tortoises can climb surprisingly well, which is why it makes sense to have a lid on the enclosure. Depending on the age of the child, it is better to padlock the gate of the turtle enclosure so that the child can only access the turtle under supervision.
A tortoise is not a cuddly animal and should not be handled too often. A lid should also prevent the child from throwing objects into the enclosure that could be dangerous for the animal.

The enclosure should be high enough so that the child can see the tortoise, but cannot play around with the heat lamps in the enclosure, as these can become very hot and pose a fire hazard.

If you use timers for the heat lamps, you should make sure that they are not switched on during the child's bedtime and that they are quiet.

For a child, feeding pets is a good exercise in responsibility. As with any other pet, it is important that parents control what and how much is fed to the turtle. The turtle's food should therefore be kept outside the child's room.

It is recommended that you rub your hands with hand sanitiser before and after touching the turtle, both for the health of the animal and the child.

Noise, sudden and rapid movements, strong temperature fluctuations and inconsistent lighting can harm the tortoise. The child should therefore be old enough to understand this responsibility and take the turtle's health into account. If this is not possible, the animal should be kept in a different room.

Tortoises have certain requirements for life and health.
