The calorie-reduced foods are supposed to help you lose weight, but in reality they can lead to even more weight gain, as fructose makes many people eat more.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The brain is the body's control centre and therefore also controls body weight. It reacts differently to fructose than to other sugars such as glucose. Depending on what you eat, different stimulus signals are triggered in the brain that determine how much you eat. Experiments have shown that brain activity varies greatly depending on the type of sugar ingested.<br \/>The hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates food intake, was not affected by fructose or glucose. However, the activity of the cerebral cortex reacted in opposite ways. The activity was inhibited when fructose was ingested and activated when glucose was ingested.<br \/>This part of the brain also determines how food tastes or smells. The effect of fructose on the cerebral cortex therefore influences the feeling of satiety. Larger quantities of food containing fructose are required until the brain decides that enough food has been ingested and a feeling of satiety sets in. As a result, considerably more calories are consumed than necessary. In many industrially processed foods, fructose has now replaced glucose because it is labelled as a dietary food. If the reduction in the feeling of satiety leads to increased food consumption, weight gain is unavoidable.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>For the consumer, this means being aware of sweeteners containing the sugar substitute fructose. However, foods in which fructose is a natural ingredient, such as fruit and vegetables, should not be avoided or reduced, as they have a very high nutritional value.
