Anyone who has travelled in Asian countries will have noticed that signs banning durian fruit are displayed on public transport and in many establishments open to the public.

The reason for the unpopularity of the fruit is its intense odour, which many people find repulsive. In Malaysia, it is forbidden to eat the cheese fruit in public because the odour disturbs people and often causes nausea. The stench is often compared to sweaty socks, vomit, rotting vegetables, cat urine or sewage. If you get over the smell and eat the fruit, you will find a fruity, delicious flavour.

The odour comes from the edible flesh of the fruit, which can penetrate even through the intact skin. It can take a very long time for the pungent odour to disappear again, especially if it is spread everywhere by the air conditioning ventilation system.

Durian is usually not picked, but only collected when the ripe fruit falls from the tree, as picking unripe durian fruit is a disgrace and can even be punished. Once the ripe fruit has been collected, it must be consumed within 5 days.
Some people believe that the cheese fruit has aphrodisiac properties. This is why the fruit is often given as a wedding present. Many people get hot flushes after eating it, which is probably due to the high fat content. The chemical breakdown in the body is similar to that of alcohol.

Photo: Guillaume Paumier / Wikimedia Commons, CC-BY-3.0

www.gpaumier.org

Durian fruit, also known as cheese fruit or stinky fruit, is a prickly fruit originally from Borneo that is now cultivated in most Southeast Asian countries.
