What exactly is positive lightning?

Positive lightning is a strange and powerful natural phenomenon. Lightning usually occurs within a cluster of cumulonimbus clouds (thunderclouds) or between these clouds and the ground. The vertical energy of a storm causes a strong negative charge at the bottom of the clouds, which attracts the positive charge of the earth. The typical lightning flash between cloud and ground occurs when the charge difference reaches a critical point, causing negative charge to travel abruptly to the ground and explode in a bright electric flash.

These negatively charged flashes have a high voltage but a relatively low amperage. Although the lightning is dangerous, it is not necessarily fatal. People are often struck by lightning, even several times, and survive without major damage.
Aeroplanes are often struck by lightning. The metal outer shell of the aircraft dissipates the electrical charge and nothing happens.

Positive lightning is believed to account for about 5% of all lightning. The negative charge of the thundercloud is balanced by a strong positive charge of the anvil-shaped cloud, up to 20km above the ground. Even if there is positive charge on the ground directly below the thundercloud, a significant charge difference can develop between the top of the cloud and negatively charged land masses further away. Occasionally this difference becomes strong enough to ignite a positively charged lightning bolt. This lightning contains huge amounts of energy and can strike the ground more than 10km from the centre of the storm, even under clear skies and sunshine.

Extremely large amounts of energy are required to trigger a positive flash. A positive flash can generate up to ten times the power of an ordinary flash, up to 300,000 amps and a billion volts, or 300,000.21 gigawatts of electricity in a single discharge.

To reassure all air travellers, it can be said that modern aircraft have numerous lightning conductors and other lightning mitigation methods that protect the sensitive electrical and fuel systems.

The powerful force of a positive flash can be much more destructive than that of an ordinary flash.
