Many diets use the concept of negative calories for weight loss. They are based on the theory that certain foods can be eaten in unlimited quantities because the calories they burn exceed the energy value they contain.

Foods with negative calories usually include grapefruit, lemon, apple, lettuce, celery and broccoli. Coffee is also often said to have this property.

In reality, however, there is no food that removes calories and therefore fat from the body when consumed. The calories consumed during metabolism are already included in the energy value contained in the food. On average, the combustion process consumes around 10% of the total energy value, in some cases up to 20%. In addition, an exact calorie count is not possible anyway, but rather a guideline.

Diet fanatics, usually the less successful ones, believe that foods with negative calories stimulate the metabolism and thus increase calorie burning. However, stimulating the metabolism does not burn more calories, it stimulates the metabolism and empties the stomach faster. In 2007, Coca-Cola and Nestle capitalised on the popularity of negative calories for advertising purposes. They claimed that the green tea drink they produced, Enviga, consumed 20 to 30 calories more per 330ml than it supplied. However, as no scientific evidence could support the claim, it had to be withdrawn.
A diet based on foods with "negative calories" often results in weight loss due to a lack of protein and other important nutrients, as the preferred foods contain mainly water, vitamins and fibre. Negative calories in the sense of the general assumption therefore do not exist. The foods mentioned should still be eaten in abundance as they are low in calories and also contain many vitamins and minerals.

Negative calories are foods that consume more calories during the digestive process than they contain.
