It is said that 43 facial muscles are used when frowning or scowling, whereas only 17 are used when smiling. So smiling is easier. But is this true at all?

It is not possible to determine with one hundred percent accuracy how many muscles the individual facial expression uses, because not only are there countless different forms of smiling or frowning; certain muscles also only participate in a small way. But let's compare the facial muscles of a "real" smile with those of a typical frown.

Facial muscles when smiling

Zygomaticus (zygomatic bone): These muscles, four in total, pull the corners of the mouth upwards. There are two on each side of the face.

Orbicularis oculi: These muscles are located around the eyes and are responsible for the typical smile lines. There are two of these muscles.

Levator labii superioris: These pull the lip and nostrils upwards. There are two of them.

Levator anguli oris: These muscles also support the position of the corner of the mouth. There are two muscles.

Risorius: These pull the corners of the mouth to the side. There are two of them.

So a total of 12 facial muscles are used for a smile.

Facial muscles when frowning

Orbicularis oculi: The same muscle that causes laughter lines around the eyes goes into action when frowning. There are two muscles.

Platysma: This pulls the lips down and forms wrinkles in the lower half of the face. There are two muscles that are connected in the middle.

Corrugator supercilii: Bilateral muscle that contributes to the formation of the forehead crease. There are two muscles.

Corrugator procerus: This is also involved in the forehead crease. There is only one of these.

Orbicularis oris: This muscle is located around the mouth and presses the lips together. It is unilateral, so there is only one muscle.

Mentalis: It pushes down the lower lip. This is also unilateral.

Depressor anguli oris: This pulls the corners of the mouth down. There is one on each side.

A total of 11 facial muscles are used when frowning.

So, in fact, one muscle is needed more for a smile than for a frown. Nevertheless, smiling seems to be less strenuous because most people smile more often than they frown, so the muscles are better trained. However, this is true for a genuine smile. An artificial smile requires far more facial muscles and thus makes more effort.

Is it true that smiling uses fewer muscles than frowning?
