It is therefore not surprising that in summer, especially in southern European climates, there are numerous cockroaches that can develop into a plague. To eliminate cockroach infestation, it is important to know the causes that attract the crawling creatures.

Cockroaches are scavengers that feed on the remains of dead animals and organic waste. This is the main reason why cockroaches are so undesirable in the home, as they are associated with rubbish and disease.
Depending on the region and climate, it is unavoidable to come across the occasional cockroach. A cockroach infestation, however, should set alarm bells ringing, as they can lead to bacterial and viral infections and cause allergies.
Cockroaches need shelter and food. Cockroach infestations are usually associated with unkempt and old buildings, as there are countless cracks and nooks and crannies to hide in. However, even in exemplary households, the number of cockroaches can get out of hand.

Firstly, the cockroaches have to find a way into the house. This is not difficult in warm weather, as windows and doors are often wide open. If the occupant of the house is able to keep the cockroaches out, he saves himself a lot of trouble. It is much more difficult to drive the cockroaches out once they have established themselves in the house.
Cracks in window frames, doors and walls can be sealed with lime or weatherproof adhesive tape. The same applies to small holes around lamps and sockets. The bottom boards of cupboards and shelves can be rubbed with boric acid to repel cockroaches, as this is where they like to harbour.
Rubbish bins in front of the house attract cockroaches to the neighbourhood, as food is plentiful here. Compost heaps and garden waste are also good breeding grounds.

Cockroaches come out of their holes at night. With a cockroach infestation, it usually happens that you don't notice them immediately, as they are rarely seen during the day. If you get up at night and switch on the light, you will see the unwanted roommates running around everywhere.
Inside the house, it is not only rubbish and dirt where cockroaches like to be. Accumulations of common household objects also provide many hiding places. Especially in the kitchen, you should avoid leaving too many objects lying around. Cockroaches can often be found behind long-stored, packaged food such as tins and parcels. If necessary, cockroaches will feed on paper labels if they can't find anything else.

Although cockroaches can occur in both hygienic and unhygienic homes, an unhygienic home is much more attractive because the food is more easily accessible. Cockroach infestations in unsanitary conditions pose a greater risk from bacterial infections. The bacteria-covered rubbish that comes into contact with them is spread everywhere. To avoid cockroach infestation, do not leave dirty crockery lying around and dispose of leftover food immediately. Surfaces should be washed with disinfectant. Fruit should not be placed in an open bowl on the table, but kept in the fridge or in sealed tins.

In addition to waste, cockroaches also need access to water. This is another reason why cockroaches are particularly fond of kitchens and bathrooms. Water bowls for pets should not be placed on the floor, but on a raised, cleared surface. Dripping taps should be repaired and washbasins and sinks should be wiped clean regularly. Cockroaches often hide inside the sink drain. To be on the safe side, the sink and siphon should be replaced regularly.

Warm weather encourages cockroaches to breed.
