The story of Saint Martin is often limited to the sharing of the coat, this is what children know about him because they like to act out the scenes on Saint Martin's Day.<\/p>\n
He is said to have cut his coat with a sword as a soldier in the small French town of Amiens in the 4th century AD to save a beggar from freezing to death. Afterwards, Christ appeared to him in the half red coat he had given the beggar, so the latter had revealed himself disguised as a beggar to put Saint Martin to the Christian test.<\/p>\n
So Saint Martin had first been a soldier, a Roman soldier, to be precise, but he had also been baptised a Christian and in the course of his soldiering he became more and more aware that this was not compatible with his Christian convictions. He then left the army to become a priest.<\/p>\n
He held this office so well that the people elected him Bishop of Tours, although he never aspired to this post.<\/p>\n
Instead of accepting the office, he is said to have hidden in a goose house out of fear and modesty in order to avoid the election. There, however, cackling geese betrayed him, which in turn gave rise to the name of Martin's goose.<\/p>\n
Saint Martin was also the namesake of Martin Luther, who was born on 10 November, so his name day followed his birthday, an interesting historical detail.<\/p>\n
But now back to the children and the celebration held on Saint Martin's Day. As an adult, everyone surely remembers with pleasure how he or she went through the streets with a self-made lantern and sang St. Martin's songs such as \"Lantern, lantern, sun, moon and stars\" or \"I walk with my lantern, and my lantern with me\".<\/p>\n
