Chest breathing is a less efficient form of breathing, as the chest rises when inhaling, which means that not all of the lung capacity can be utilised. Some of the air you breathe remains in the lower part of the lungs and is not exchanged. The lower part of the lungs contains the warmest blood vessels, so this part works more effectively in transporting oxygen into the blood.

During abdominal breathing, the air is drawn into the deeper part of the lungs. The abdomen pushes forwards when inhaling, while the chest remains relatively motionless.

Newborn babies automatically breathe into their tummy, but later they unlearn this "correct" form of breathing. Regular practice can help to train abdominal breathing. This involves consciously paying attention to the protrusion of the abdomen and contracting the abdominal muscles when exhaling. You should breathe relaxed about 12 to 20 times per minute and take a short break between breaths. Practising for just a few minutes a day can make a big difference, as abdominal breathing reduces stress and lowers blood pressure.

Abdominal breathing is often referred to as diaphragmatic breathing. This can be misleading because the diaphragm is used for every breath, regardless of whether it is superficial chest breathing or abdominal breathing. Humans do not have the ability to control the diaphragm because the diaphragm muscles work automatically through nerve stimuli.

Breathing correctly can increase performance by up to 60%, as oxygen is transported more effectively into the bloodstream.
