Gifts and gift wrapping make a big impression, especially in international friendships and partnerships. Anyone who takes the trouble to learn more about gift wrapping in other cultures will earn the respect and trust of friends, partners and business relations. It's not just what's inside that counts, but how the gift is presented.

In Japan, gifts are an important part of business life. It is particularly important that the gift is properly wrapped. Brightly coloured wrapping paper can appear ostentatious and pompous. The aim is not to draw attention to the gift, rather the gift is a polite addition. Pastel colours are therefore more in vogue. Under no circumstances should eye-catching bows be used. To play down the importance of the gift and make it look less like an attempt at a bribe, it can even be given in a shopping bag, provided it is a nice-looking paper bag from a reputable shop.

In Indian culture, black and white are considered unlucky colours and should therefore never be used for gift wrapping. The lucky colours red, green and yellow are a better choice.

There are many different traditions and cultures in China, red is usually a lucky colour and therefore one of the safest colours for wrapping paper. Other options are pink, gold and silver.

Europe has a variety of different customs when it comes to gift wrapping. In Spain, a gift of fine quality is wrapped particularly nicely. Russians wrap expensive gifts and tend to give cheaper gifts unadorned. In Denmark, gifts are often wrapped in red wrapping paper. Italians avoid the use of black and gold as traditional mourning colours and purple as an unlucky colour.

In Latin America, there are few fixed gift-giving traditions. The few customs surrounding the giving of gifts originate from other cultures. Black and purple are avoided as sacred colours. People also like to use high-quality wrapping paper to express their appreciation of the recipient. This is especially true for business relationships.

Andere Länder haben andere Sitten, das gilt auch für das einpacken von Geschenken.
