With knowledge and the right tools, anyone can have a lush green lawn in their garden. A beautiful lawn needs regular care and attention, all year round. Here are some basic rules for a well-kept lawn.<\/p>\n

Bare patches in the lawn should be reseeded early in the year. Use a rake to loosen the soil and spread the grass seed. Cover the seeds with fresh, good soil and protect them from birds with a little straw. It is important to use straw, not hay. The grass seeds are watered thoroughly every day, taking care not to make the water jet too hard so that the soil and seeds are not washed away.
When the first blades of grass are visible, the straw can be removed. Continue to keep the soil well moist.<\/p>\n
During the spring months, the lawn needs to be aerated. This is done with an aerator. There are different types of lawn aerators, for example there are attachments for shoe soles or rollers. The lawn aerator has tips that pierce holes about one centimetre thick in the ground. This allows oxygen and water to reach the roots more easily and makes the lawn healthier.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
At the beginning of spring, the lawn is fertilised, preferably with a fertiliser containing weed killer. Use the fertiliser according to the instructions on the packet. The fertiliser also sinks into the holes and can thus nourish the roots more effectively.
Before mowing for the first time, check the cutting edge of the lawn mower for sharpness to be on the safe side. Grind and sharpen if necessary. A clean, sharp cutting edge cuts the tips of the grass without damaging them. The grass should not be cut shorter than five centimetres. This allows more liquid to be stored in the soil.<\/p>\n
The roots of grass plants need sufficient watering all year round to maintain growth and colour. Sprinkle the lawn with water and liquid fertiliser once a week. It is best to use a hose attachment for this. Depending on the weather, watering once a week may be sufficient. In summer, it may be necessary to water the lawn every other day.
