You let things happen that you don't like without expressing your opinion and speaking up for your own well-being.

Usually, insecurity and fear of not being popular is behind passive communication. People prefer to go with the flow against their will for fear that others will make fun of a dissenting opinion. By communicating passively, you allow other people to take advantage of you, intentionally or unintentionally.
The desire for popularity and easy company or simply shyness seem to make it easier to say nothing and go along with the wishes of others. Often this even goes so far as to endanger one's own health in the process, such as when one does not dare to be the only one not to eat fish even though one is allergic. It is often the case that a non-smoker allows others to smoke in his presence or even in his home, even though he himself is against it.
A typical example is taking drugs through peer pressure. One person might prefer to do without the experience, but goes along with it because everyone joins in and you don't want to look like a buffer.

Even when dealing with strangers, you often put yourself at a disadvantage through passive communication. At the hairdresser's, you don't really like the haircut you just had, but you don't dare tell the hairdresser. When shopping, you are taken advantage of because you settle for a substitute product that does not quite meet your expectations.

Passive communication is the opposite of aggressive communication. The ideal communication lies in the middle. You speak your mind when it is appropriate without being hurtful or aggressive, but you also don't let yourself be taken advantage of by silence.

In passive communication, one's own feelings or benefits are put aside in favour of the other person.
