It is important that young people understand that rude behaviour online has the same consequences for the other person as in a face-to-face conversation.<\/p>\n
In any form of written correspondence on the computer, certain rules of etiquette should be observed. For example, you should never write exclusively in capital letters, as this is considered shouting in computer correspondence.
Messages should be easy to read. Fonts that look decorative but are difficult to decipher should be avoided. When writing in different colours, you should also ensure sufficient contrast so that the recipient can read the message easily.<\/p>\n
Divide longer messages into clear sections. Nothing is more frustrating and difficult to read than a long paragraph in one go.<\/p>\n
For young people and adults alike, it is important to remember that written messages can all too easily be misinterpreted. In a written message, the meaning and intended effect cannot be furthered by the tone of voice. A seemingly innocuous sentence is often misinterpreted as an insult. Smileys can be used to make the meaning of written messages clearer. This avoids misunderstandings.<\/p>\n
Never use swear words in a written message. What is written cannot be taken back. It is best never to write anything in a message that you would not be prepared to say directly to the person's face.<\/p>\n

Especially on computers that are used by several people, the time spent in front of the screen should be limited. It is unfair to confiscate a computer for several hours when siblings are waiting for it.<\/p>\n
Finally, young people should be warned that not everyone in public chat rooms is who they say they are. There may be malicious intentions behind supposed compliments.
