Not all cameras are the same, as even the layman knows and goes out to buy the device that has the most functions and the highest technical values. They then realise that they were wrong when they can't operate the camera because everything seems too complicated and they can't do much with the manual because they have no idea about photography. As with many other devices, you need to be clear about the purpose for which you want to use the digital camera and how much you know about the technology or are willing to learn.

In adverts, the lure of high pixel counts and zoom and the fact that a camera has many special functions is particularly attractive. However, if you don't intend to familiarise yourself with these functions and get to grips with them, you could have saved yourself up to several hundred euros of the purchase price, because more is not always better. Especially not if your interest stops at the \"auto\" function, i.e. if you want the camera to do the photographer's work.<\/p>\n

Before buying a digital camera, you should therefore ask yourself for which occasions you want to use the device and which functions it should have.<\/p>\n

This includes first determining your budget. Additional accessories such as a battery, charger and memory card are usually already included with the camera. However, the memory cards supplied are often not sufficient for a satisfactory result, as the storage space is only sufficient for a few shots.<\/p>\n

The price should therefore include an additional memory card with at least 128 MB capacity.<\/p>\n

A second battery is also recommended so that you always have a charged device to hand. If the camera does not have a removable battery, this is of course not a problem.<\/p>\n

If you don't want to learn the techniques of photography, you don't need manual aperture selection and exposure time, for example. In this case, it is sufficient to opt for a small compact camera that can still offer some advanced functions.<\/p>\n

If you choose a compact digital camera, this means that you can transport it anywhere without much effort, it is also relatively robust, but its reduced size should emphasise its user-friendliness.<\/p>\n

On many cameras, the controls are kept quite small and multiple button assignments are possible, although this is not highly recommended.<\/p>\n

The display window should also be clear and legible.<\/p>\n

When it comes to the question of pixels, i.e. the optical resolution of the camera, the most important thing to ask yourself is in what size you would like to print photos, as a pixel count of 3 megapixels is sufficient for standard photos of 13\u00d718 or 15\u00d720.<\/p>\n

A higher pixel count only becomes important if you want to use larger print formats, because then the optical resolution is particularly important. You have to imagine it like a television: the closer I get to it, the blurrier the image becomes. The printouts of photos with a low pixel count behave in the same way, the photo appears blurred because the camera has only reproduced a few details of the image.<\/p>\n

Another important area is the zoom, i.e. the focal length with which the camera captures the image section and makes it appear closer or further away.<\/p>\n

Here, too, you should be aware that this function should not be decisive for the normal use of home photos, as the quality of a printout, i.e. the resolution, usually suffers greatly when using the zoom function and it is better to take the photo with the normal focal length and then edit it afterwards.<\/p>\n

For example, you can select a section that is enlarged by an editing programme, which provides better results as the image was taken at a normal resolution. This is possible with most photo print providers because the photo comes in digital form and can therefore be easily edited afterwards.
