Kittens are considered newborns until their eyes are open and they begin to walk. From the age of 4 to 10 weeks, they wean themselves off their mother's milk. During these first few weeks, the mother cat takes care of feeding and grooming the kitten, i.e. she cleans the kittens of superficial dirt and licks their fur. Only if a kitten is not kept sufficiently clean and dirt and faeces accumulate should it be bathed to prevent illness. This must be done very carefully so that the kitten is not rejected by its mother.<\/p>\n

The mother cat's personal hygiene is sufficient to prevent infections in the newborns, so bathing is not necessary. At the earliest between 4 and 8 weeks of age, a kitten should be bathed by humans if necessary.<\/p>\n
Only a very dirty kitten needs to be bathed. For normal dirt, rubbing with a damp cloth is sufficient. For a full body wash, wet a soft cloth with warm water and wipe the kitten with it. Start with the face and work your way down the body to the tail. Particularly dirty areas can be washed with cat shampoo and a new cloth on the dirty areas. Then wrap the kitten in a towel to keep it warm while it dries. Never use soap or shampoo for human use.
As soon as the kitten shows signs of stress, it should be patted and the procedure stopped until it is calm again. Older kittens can be offered a treat.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
A kitten should never be washed in a cold or chilly environment. Small cats quickly suffer from hypothermia. The body temperature is normally between 37.5 and 38.5 degrees. If it falls below 37 degrees, the kitten begins to suffer from hypothermia. Typical signs are shivering, cold skin, apathy and, in extreme cases, unconsciousness. The temperature can be measured in the anus.<\/p>\n
In kittens, fleas can be removed with a flea comb or by hand. Occasional rubbing with soap will kill fleas and their eggs.
