Words alone produce more than one meaning. There are also facial expressions, tone of voice, body gestures, emotional expressions such as redness or paleness etc. that accompany a concept. Communication is full of additional meanings to the one originally intended. Manipulation makes use of this phenomenon.

In order to recognise manipulative behaviour, it is necessary to focus on the feelings of the immediate present. In the immediate course of a conversation, many people limit themselves to the spoken content of the words and ignore their emotional reactions. These emotional reactions can indicate whether you are being manipulated. Feelings should be taken seriously and analysed. The first indication of manipulation is usually an uneasy feeling or the feeling of being manipulated.

Manipulation relies on contradiction, the overt message contradicts the hidden one. Many people instinctively recognise this contradiction but do not pay enough attention to it. Communication is expressed through the entire body; tiny body movements and facial expressions are perceived intuitively. As this happens within a few seconds, most people do not take enough time to interpret the intuitively perceived signs.
If feelings are split during a conversation, this is one of the most important signs to exercise caution.

Hidden messages can come in various forms, but often become clear on closer inspection. Excessive friendliness, a tense posture, avoiding eye contact and urging people to hurry accompany the manipulation in many cases.

Time pressure is one of the most frequently used means of manipulation. Manipulation is not always at work when one person tries to persuade another to do something. However, by deliberately limiting the time frame, the manipulator wants to deprive the other person of the opportunity to analyse their feelings and reconsider their decision.

Unfortunately, politeness within society is often also an obstacle. Out of politeness, people do not take the time to question words or think about the consequences of an action. Compassionate stories make you want to believe the other person, despite possible emotional objections. A person who is open and honest in their intentions and does not try to manipulate should understand scepticism and caution. You should therefore not use false politeness when in doubt, but take the time to reflect or reject directly.

Oft ist es nicht leicht, manipulatives Verhalten zu erkennen, denn die zwischenmenschliche Kommunikation ist komplex und mehrdeutig.
