As with almost all birds, the basis of their diet consists of grains, which can and should be enriched with vitamin-rich, fresh food.

Good zebra finch food consists of grass seed and various types of millet. When buying the food, pay attention to the expiry date, because if the food is too old, it has hardly any nutritional value for the birds. A good test for the nutritional value of the feed is to moisten a few grains and leave them for a few days. Good seeds germinate, old seeds do not germinate.

Zebra finches like to eat fresh greens such as lettuce, dandelion leaves and chickweed. The leaves should only be fed as long as they are fresh. Anything the birds do not eat should be removed.
Fresh fruit and vegetables should not be missing from the diet of zebra finches. They particularly like apples, pears, peaches, bananas and carrots. It is best to try out what they like best. The same applies here: remove the dried fruit after one day at the latest.

In addition to grain food, fruit and vegetables, zebra finches can also be given an egg from time to time. Eggs are particularly important for breeding zebra finches. To do this, boil a hen's egg and feed it in a bowl, crushed with a fork. Egg should not be fed more than once a week.

Zebra finches need calcium. They get calcium from the grit in good bird sand or from cuttlebone.

Zebra finches are hungry birds and eat chaotically. The seeds are scattered all over the cage. In nature, this behaviour helps the plants to reproduce, but in the cage it means that the bird sand has to be changed frequently.
Zebra finches like to drink and eat at the same time. They should therefore have fresh water available near their food bowl. Food should always be available, as zebra finches often eat small portions throughout the day.

Important: Peel fresh fruit and vegetables. Dandelion leaves and grasses picked from meadows must not contain herbicides. Zebra finches are extremely sensitive to plant poisons, so only pick them from wild, untreated meadows.

Zebra finches need a balanced diet for a healthy and long life.
