For some years now, Halloween has also been celebrated here in Germany. It usually involves children dressing up in scary costumes and then going out into the street to knock on houses in small groups, similar to carnival, to recite a spell and ask for a treat. If they don't get anything, they curse the house and its inhabitants, at least that's what the saying traditionally recited at the door says: \"trick or treat?\".<\/p>\n
Today's custom was adopted in Germany from the USA, where it was spread through the medium of cinema and television. Although you see far fewer children actually wandering the streets in Germany, they usually limit themselves to appearing dressed up at parties, the festival is nevertheless becoming increasingly popular.

However, the festival does not originate from the USA, as the country's own history is still too recent for that. It was brought there by the immigrants from Great Britain at the time.<\/p>\n
But when and how did this festival originally come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n The Celts, who were a pagan people, celebrated a festival 5000 years ago in Scotland and Ireland to bid farewell to summer, the Samhain festival, on 31 October.<\/p>\n The belief in spirits and demons led them to protect their homes from visitation in some way, because when the sun barely shone in winter, it was believed that the spirits of the dead would find it easier to enter.<\/p>\n Night and darkness have always been attributed to the spirit world. On the eve of the Samhain festival, fires were therefore lit to frighten away evil souls.<\/p>\n People also began to give the spirits gifts of food outside the houses so that they could be appeased and leave the houses alone.<\/p>\n This later gave rise to the custom of hollowing out faces and grimaces in pumpkins to give the impression that the house had already been haunted by an evil spirit.<\/p>\n When Christianity established itself and attempted to convert the Celts, the pagan traditions were also to be abolished.<\/p>\n The 1st of November has always been a high Catholic festival celebrated on the 1st of November and therefore seemed very well suited to counter the pagan festival on the 31st of October. Above all, the pagans' fear of the dead was to be taken away, as the dead are honoured and remembered on All Saints' Day.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, the church did not manage to invalidate the pagan custom. Perhaps the fear of the consequences of being punished by evil spirits and souls if they were not appeased remained too strong, or perhaps the favour for these dark, satanic customs was just too great.<\/p>\n The term Halloween was simply derived from the English term \"All Hollows Eve\" and later shortened to Halloween.<\/p>\n Nowadays, the origins have largely been lost and most children don't even know what this festival is actually about, at least not in Germany.<\/p>\n This probably goes hand in hand with the tendency to cultivate customs but no longer associate them with their religious origins, as they have become meaningless in many families today.<\/p>\n Even the youngest children today are convinced that ghosts and demons don't exist anyway, except on television.
