If you've always had a favourite dog, the choice can be easy, but even then you should have researched the type of dog carefully before you buy it, because perhaps a different breed would be more suited to your needs.

It is normal that the owner will initially make demands on the dog because he knows exactly for what purpose he is acquiring an animal. Be it because he wants to spend more time in nature and believes that a dog is a very good reason to realise this, or because he wants his children to grow up in contact with animals, or to shine with the pedigree dog at dog shows. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that the owner owes the dog a pleasant, species-appropriate life, otherwise there is no point in acquiring a particular animal.

The question of whether it has to be a pedigree dog or whether it can be a mixed breed also usually depends on the preferences of the future owner, or on the price he is prepared to pay for the animal.

However, there are also some aspects that can help with the selection, because pedigree dogs and mixed breeds have some important differences.

Crossbreeds are "unpredictable"

With mixed breeds, you can never reliably estimate how big they will grow while they are still puppies. Even if they appear to carry many of the characteristics of a small breed, they may later develop in the direction of the second breed from which the mix originated. It is even more difficult to estimate when there are many different breeds in the blood.

The same applies to character and appearance anyway.

In the case of crossbreeds, breeding rules have not normally been observed, because it will be a random mating, unless there are even worse reasons, such as commercial mass reproduction.

Mixed breeds are therefore also more likely to have complications with regard to the animal's physique, weaknesses and temperament.

General selection criteria

For mixed breeds such as pedigree dogs, the better the animal has been raised, the more you will enjoy it. This means that if the animal has lived under ideal conditions in the first weeks or months of its life and has received a lot of attention and has had good experiences with people in particular, then it will also be able to develop good characteristics as an adult animal.

There are breeders and breeders. Some invest a lot in the welfare of their animals, others are interested in fast, mass reproduction and save money wherever they can.

You should therefore find out about breeders or sellers in advance, the more information the better. This also applies to young animals. A good breeder will give you plenty of time to choose the animals before making a decision. This assumes that you are allowed to spend time with them. A spontaneous, hasty purchase is strongly discouraged.

No good breeder will be able to offer kittens all year round because there would not be enough time. Breeders who offer dogs like mass-produced goods are usually only interested in profit and not in the welfare of the animals.

All dogs should have a valid and updated vaccination card.

Pedigree dogs

Animals with papers, which are offered as pedigree dogs, are generally only produced from parent animals with a pure pedigree, which have previously been selected and assessed by breeding judges as suitable for breeding.

If the animals do not have pedigree papers, it is not possible to speak of purebredness. Although the offspring may only have pure breed characteristics, they cannot be issued with papers. This seal of quality is only awarded to pedigree dogs that have been deliberately bred by specialists.

We must also warn against forgery of pedigree papers. If in doubt, please contact the issuing breeding organisation.

There are pedigree dogs and mixed breeds in all sizes, designs and with different characters and preferences.
