Sports snacks need to provide plenty of energy without overloading the body. It is also important to have energy sources that are not short-lived but remain in the body long enough.

The timing of a meal before exercise is important. Depending on how long before and after you eat something, this has a noticeable effect on your fitness and endurance.

Two hours before exercise, the body should be supplied with a combination of proteins and carbohydrates with a low glycaemic index. The carbohydrates are digested slowly and maintain energy levels. A meal of 200g natural Greek yoghurt and trail mix or fruit with low-fat cheese and nuts is good.

If you eat an hour before exercise, the amount of protein, fat and fibre should be reduced, as these are digested for longer and put a strain on the body during exercise. However, the body still needs some protein to prevent it from only getting short-term energy from sugar and then seeing its energy levels drop rapidly. A snack of 60g of apple sauce and natural yoghurt or a grapefruit with a pinch of salt is suitable for this.

If you only have 30 minutes before exercise, you need easily digestible snacks that provide quick energy. Highly sugary drinks should be avoided to prevent a sugar crash. Fresh fruit juices diluted with mineral water can help in the short term.

After sport, the body needs to be supplied with protein. However, you should already have the next meal in mind. Drinking a protein-rich milkshake straight after exercise and then eating a full meal contains too many calories and makes all the exercise you have just done for nothing. If you eat within 45 minutes of exercising, you no longer need a milkshake. If your next meal is still a few hours away, a recovery snack of a hard-boiled egg, a sandwich with peanut butter, honey and banana and a small milk drink will help.

Anyone who is sporty knows that the right snacks are essential to stay in top form.
