Only the coast receives around 20cm of precipitation per year, while strong downdraughts blow the rain away inland. It is therefore difficult to imagine that this harsh continent once looked very different.
Antarctica was much warmer 45 million years ago. Ecological diversity is directly related to the water temperature of the surrounding currents. Tropical water temperatures have more diversity than cold waters. In the Eocene epoch, which was 56 to 34 million years ago, today's Antarctica was connected to New Guinea and Australia and formed the supercontinent Gondwanaland. The huge land mass provided protection from cold ocean currents and supported a tropical rainforest climate. According to bone finds, many tropical and subtropical animal species lived in Antarctica, including turtles and even some mammals.

Around 23 million years ago, the Antarctic mass separated from the rest of the continent and thus gave up its protection against the cold currents. Ice began to form and wiped out tropical life. However, this process took about 20 million years. Today, there are only a few life forms left in Antarctica.

Antarctica is the coldest and driest place on our planet.
