It often retracts one leg and only sits on the other on the perch. A muscle-tendon mechanism in the bird's legs ensures that the bird does not fall from the branch or perch. Due to the bent position of the knee and leg joints when sitting, the toes automatically contract and cling to the perch. The tendons on the leg are taut and prevent the leg from moving on its own. Even if it doesn't look like it, this posture is still relaxing for the bird because it is purely mechanical and does not require any conscious muscle action.

Birds rarely sleep during the day, unless they feel very safe. Birds' natural instinct is not to sleep during the day, as they are then easy prey. at night, the bird sleeps all the more soundly. This is why it occasionally happens that a bird that is startled in its sleep panics immensely and runs around the cage like a madman.

Birds sit on a perch to sleep.
