With a good nutrition plan, a pregnant woman's body can be provided with the necessary nutrients just as efficiently if she avoids meat, fish, poultry and even other animal products partially or completely.

The fact is that vegetarians and vegans naturally pay more attention to their own health and that of their growing baby and in most cases know more about the supply of nutrients than non-vegetarians. They also often take the vitamin supplements for pregnant women recommended by their gynaecologist with greater care. All pregnant women, vegetarian or not, are advised to take additional vitamin supplements for the duration of their pregnancy to provide the body with the extra nutrients it needs.

Certain nutrients such as protein, calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as essential fatty acids are usually associated with animal products, which is why many pregnant vegetarians are confused. Vegetarians can meet the need for high-quality protein and essential fatty acids through wholemeal products, beans, peas and nuts, soya and quinoa.

Calcium is particularly important for the development of bones and teeth in babies. If there is a calcium deficiency, the foetus will draw the calcium it needs from the mother's body. Calcium-rich vegetarian foods include broccoli, cabbage, tofu, figs, sesame seeds and kale, with calcium-fortified milk, soya milk and orange juice.

During pregnancy, the body needs particularly high amounts of iron. Vegetarian sources of iron are green leafy vegetables, dried fruit, nuts and soya. To optimise iron absorption, foods containing vitamin C should be consumed together with foods containing iron.

Vegetarians often have a lower vitamin B12 level. Those who do not eat meat should pay particular attention to their intake of B vitamins during pregnancy. Fortified breakfast cereals and vegetarian meat and dairy substitutes are the best sources of B vitamins.

Fish is the number one source of omega 3 fatty acids. Those who do not eat fish reduce their potential intake of toxic heavy metals, but must ensure their supply of omega 3 through linseed, walnuts, vegetables or supplements.

With a conscious diet, pregnant women can ensure their baby's and their own body's nutrient supply even with a completely meat-free diet.

A vegetarian diet is healthy for humans and environmentally friendly, but is it good for mums-to-be to give up meat, fish and poultry?

["4169"],"_fgj2wp_old_id":["3177
1082
vegetarier und schwangerschaft
1
vegetarians-and-pregnancy
12

post-4170","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gesundheit","entry","has-media
["GET
