Here are a few tips for parents of toddlers to overcome some difficulties.

Sick children

To be able to look down your throat when you have a sore throat, it helps to use a flat lollipop to push your tongue down.
Splinters can be removed from the finger more painlessly if the finger is softened in cooking oil for a few minutes beforehand.
Children's medicine is usually available in the form of syrup. If the child does need to take a tablet, you can put it on a spoonful of apple sauce so that the child swallows it all together without any problems.

Safety for children

When bathing in a large bathtub, you can place the child in a laundry basket in the water.
A small bell on the door alerts the parents as soon as the child opens the door and is on the way out.
Stick funny stickers at the child's eye level on glass doors so that they don't run into them.
Colour cleaning products with red marker and explain to the child that red is dangerous.
Wrap drinking glasses with one or two rubber bands to prevent them from slipping out of small children's hands.
If you are travelling in large crowds, your child should wear a wristband with their name and telephone number to be on the safe side in case they are separated from their parents.
When travelling abroad to unfamiliar and crowded areas, don't be afraid to keep your child on a lead. A little restricted freedom of movement and contemptuous looks from others are still better than losing a child abroad.

Dealing with children

When an angry child cries, it is often easier to get an earful if you don't shout back but whisper in the child's ear.
Children who want to choose their own outfits and can't decide are given a limited selection of three outfits to choose from.
If a child is afraid of falling out of bed, a mattress or pillow on the floor next to the bed can help.
Children who do not want to tidy their room can swap this task for an adult task. The parent tidies the room while the child washes the dishes or vacuums. The child usually finds that tidying the room is the easier task.
Children who watch too much television should be given a small amount of pocket money from which they have to pay a coin for each television programme. In this way, they learn to limit their television viewing to their favourite shows.

The world of young children is full of difficulties and dangers.
