A young rabbit needs the right food to grow up healthy. In addition to a fresh and clean bowl of water, rabbits that are only a few weeks old need the right kind of food for their age. The better the food as a young rabbit, the healthier the animal will be in its later life and the more years you can enjoy its company.<\/p>\n

Rabbits can also be given special milk powder for kittens. A baby rabbit that does not yet have fur and whose eyes have not yet opened is given one millilitre of warm baby milk every three hours or so, preferably with a syringe directly into its mouth (without a needle, of course). It is important to feed the baby rabbit slowly so that it does not get the milk into its lungs. A rabbit that already has fur but still has closed eyes is given two millilitres of milk every three hours. Do not force the baby rabbit to drink if it no longer wants to. Many baby rabbits die from overfeeding.<\/p>\n
Hay is vital for rabbits, even very young animals. The fibre contained in hay ensures good digestion. Rabbits are very sensitive to intestinal problems, which unfortunately very often end fatally. The rabbit's cage can be filled with hay, as rabbits like to hide in hay caves and only eat as much hay as they need. Rabbits like the flavour of alfalfa and clover hay, but these contain a lot of protein. Ordinary meadow grass or sweet grass is safer. Oat or wheat straw is also good for rabbits. Always make sure that the rabbit has enough fresh hay available.<\/p>\n
Ready-made rabbit food contains the vitamins and minerals a rabbit needs to live. Baby rabbits should always have a full bowl of rabbit food that they can nibble at will. Adult rabbits need less food because it is very high in calories. From the age of one year, a rabbit eats between 1\/4 and 1\/2 cup of dry food per day.<\/p>\n
Fresh food is also very important for both growing and adult rabbits. From around two months, baby rabbits can be given fresh vegetables. Lettuce and carrots are good to start with. Place a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable in a clean bowl and change it every day. If the baby rabbit tolerates the vegetables served well, you can try new varieties. Green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, parsley, carrot greens, mint and spinach are good for young rabbits. Three different types of vegetables per day are ideal. No fruit should be offered until the animal weighs at least two and a half kilos, as the fruit acids can be too aggressive for the rabbit's not yet fully developed digestive system. Adult rabbits can be given apples and pears, but not too much at once, otherwise they will develop diarrhoea.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Under no circumstances should a rabbit be given starchy vegetables such as potatoes, beans, maize or peas or anything that has been cooked.<\/p>\n
Fresh water should always be plentiful, as rabbits drink a lot of water. The daily amount of drinking water should be about twice the weight of the food. A rabbit that does not drink for 24 hours can become seriously ill or die.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
