We've all been there: it starts to rain on the way to the bus stop and you don't have an umbrella with you. You instinctively start running, because the quicker you get out of the rain, the less wet you get, right?<\/p>\n

The eternal dilemma of whether it is worth running faster in the rain or not was answered by meteorologists in 1995. According to their calculations, running in the rain without an umbrella should not protect you from getting wet. It was argued that by moving faster, you catch more raindrops and therefore get just as much water as the slower runner.
However, two employees of the National Climatic Data Centre in the USA tested this calculation and found that a faster runner only catches about 30 to 50% of the falling rainwater, in contrast to the slow walker. The increased interception of raindrops due to the fast forward movement is more than compensated for by the reduced time exposed to the rain.<\/p>\n
