If you have to stand at bus stops in winter, you should be properly dressed for it. Frequent changes often make the feeling of cold worse, because the change between the icy bus stop and the heated buses and trains upsets the body's heat balance.

Dress according to the onion principle. Layering several layers of clothing that are airy and not too tight-fitting insulates the body against low outside temperatures. Body heat can be stored under the clothing. When boarding the heated bus, it makes sense to take off at least one layer of clothing for the journey and put it back on when you get off in the cold. This prevents overheating and sweating inside the vehicle, which can make you feel even colder when you get off. Ideally, you should put on an air-permeable polyester or silk shirt that lies directly against your skin. Cotton can quickly become damp through perspiration and is then uncomfortable against the skin. A sweatshirt, fleece or woollen jumper should be worn over it. A waterproof, windproof, lined winter jacket that covers the kidney area and a little over the legs should be worn on top. The legs can be protected from the cold by warm tights, which can be taken off during the day in the warm office. Wool trousers or thick jeans over the tights keep your legs nice and warm.

The best way to protect your hands is with mittens, which retain heat better than gloves. You should take your mittens off when you are in a warm bus. Mittens should have a good lining on the inside and a waterproof outer layer. Longer jacket sleeves also offer additional protection for the hands and keep the wrists warm.

Feet should be wrapped warmly but not excessively so as not to impair blood circulation. Too many socks on top of each other can constrict the toes and make them numb. This also applies to shoes, which should not be too tight so that the blood circulation in the toes is not interrupted. Polyester socks are also better for the feet than cotton socks. If you have enough room in your shoes, you can wear a pair of woollen socks over them. Lined, water-repellent winter shoes with thick tread soles keep your feet dry and warm and protect them from slipping.

A large proportion of body heat is lost through the head, which is why it should be adequately protected in winter. A woollen hat that covers the ears provides good insulation. The neck is a weak point. If you are not wearing a turtleneck jumper and do not have a jacket with a fold-up collar, you should definitely wear a woollen scarf. This can also cover your mouth and chin if necessary.

If there is snow and the sun is shining, you should protect your eyes with sunglasses, as the reflection in the snow is very bright. Sunglasses also protect you from strong winds.

Standing at a bus stop in the freezing cold is very unpleasant and can of course make you ill.
