The beauty of cork is that the trees don't have to be cut down for it.

Cork is the outer layer of the bark of the cork oak. It is not an ordinary bark, because cork is elastic and non-combustible.

Every year, the cork oak produces many quantities of this resistant bark, up to a thickness of 25cm, which protects the tree from heat, cold and the dangers of forest fires. If this protective cover is pulled off, the tree develops a new layer of cork of the same thickness within 10 years.

55% of the cork consumed around the world comes from Portugal, followed by Spain (30%) and other countries such as France, Italy, Morocco and Tunis. The versatility of cork was discovered by the Romans, who used cork as a float for fishing nets and as a comfortable sole for sandals. It seems that they also discovered cork as a stopper for liquid containers.

Because cork can withstand high temperatures, it is used to make certain seals in engines and as part of thermal panels in some spaceships. Aesthetics and insulating properties make cork panels popular as wall coverings. The core of a baseball is also made from cork. But cork is undoubtedly most famous for its use as a stopper in wine or champagne bottles ( cork) .

A good organisation of cork oaks shows that man is able to work harmoniously with nature. In doing so, he uses the products produced by nature without plundering them. Old cork oaks beautify the landscape, provide shade and food for livestock and soften the heat of summer. Various endangered bird species such as the black vulture or the black stork nest in cork oaks. The particularly endangered Iberian lynx benefits from the protection offered by cork oaks. In fact, the World Conservation Fund recently stated that the survival of this species of lynx depends on the success of the cork industry in Spain and Portugal.

The next time you uncork a wine bottle, keep in mind that this cork is a biodegradable product made of natural material that is one hundred percent renewable and helps protect the ecosystem.

Cork is a part of a tree that is essential for the production of engines, baseballs and wine, and is also used as wall decoration and in space.
