Since then, almost every toothpaste contains fluorine. But does fluorine really protect teeth and is it actually healthy for the body?

In 1939, an American dentist discovered a correlation between patients with fewer caries problems and high fluorine levels in drinking water. In areas with about 1 ppm fluorine in the drinking water, dental patients had fewer cavities. Even today, almost every toothpaste advertises "fluorine" as a sign that it is an effective dental care product to protect teeth.

However, the actual effect of fluorine as a tooth protector is quite controversial, because the original studies were too one-sided. It is now known that fluorine does more harm than good in the body, because it is actually a toxic substance when consumed excessively.

Fluorine is a waste product of the production of copper, iron and aluminium. Fluorine is highly toxic, which is why people were grateful for its discovery in 1939 as a dental protector, because it provided a legal way of disposing of fluorine.

Before fluorine was added to drinking water and toothpaste and society was educated that fluorine was good for teeth, the substance was used mainly as an insecticide and rat poison.

What fluorine can do in the body

Laboratory experiments show that fluorine increases the absorption of aluminium in the brain. Increased amounts of aluminium are found in the brain of most Alzheimer's patients. Osteoporosis studies have shown a link between hip fractures and fluorine intake. Excessive intake of fluorine has been shown to damage the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, leading to reduced mobility, muscle degeneration and nerve disorders.
Numerous studies have found a link between fluorine and bone cancer. Last but not least, it should be mentioned that the age of women who give birth to a child with Down syndrome decreases with the fluorine content in the body, or in other words: the more fluorine is stored in the body, the younger are the women whose babies have Down syndrome.

Fluorine is a poison that is considered even more dangerous than lead. Lead has a rating of 3-4, while fluorine has a 4. (3= moderately toxic; 4= very toxic, Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products). Thus fluorine is only one score point away from arsenic which has a 5 (extremely toxic).

Fluorine also does more harm than good for the teeth: contrary to the general belief propagated by advertising, fluorine makes bones and tooth enamel porous and brittle.

About half of the fluorine ingested every day is stored in the body. This is what makes fluorine so harmful, because the amount of fluorine stored in the body gradually increases. Healthy kidneys can only break down 50% of the fluorine ingested daily. The remaining 50% are stored in bones and teeth.

How to avoid fluorine intake

Fluorine is absorbed through fluorine-enriched toothpaste or mouthwash, fluorine-containing drinking water, fluorine-containing supplements (e.g. table salt) or food prepared with fluorine-containing water.

Fluorine intake can be reduced by the following measures:

Those who live in areas where drinking water is treated with fluorine should buy mineral water for drinking and cooking. Those who want to use water from the tap should put on a filter that filters fluorine, minerals and nitrates from the water.
Avoid Teflon-coated cookware because scratching the Teflon coating releases PTFT, a toxic fluorine compound.
Avoid fruit juices from fluoridated areas.
Only use fluorine-free toothpaste and mouthwash. This is especially true for children as they are more likely to swallow toothpaste.
Do not use table salt enriched with fluorine.
Never use water containing fluoride to mix baby milk or baby porridge.
Fluorine is also present in cigarettes, so do not smoke.
Fluorine is often used as a preservative for canned foods, so avoid canned foods.
Avoid long-term use of fluorine-containing medicines. Some antidepressants and osteoporosis medicines contain fluorine compounds.
Do not drink excessive amounts of green or black tea, as these often contain increased amounts of fluorine. Always prepare teas with filtered or mineral water.

The conspiracy behind fluoridated drinking water

The theory that drinking water is deliberately contaminated with fluorine by the government has many supporters. The conspiracy theory originates from Nazi Germany, because the Gestapo used fluorine-enriched drinking water in concentration camps to keep prisoners tame and easier to control. Constant excessive doses of fluorine poison and numb certain areas in the brain, thereby reducing a person's willpower.

The supporters of the conspiracy theory in today's world are convinced that drinking water and toothpaste are not enriched with fluorine to make teeth healthier, but to reduce the revolt of the masses and thus make them easier to dominate. Allegedly, this idea has been gleefully embraced by communist countries, as a communist society is based on the subjugation of the masses.

All-clear: Drinking water in Germany

In Germany, the fluoride content in drinking water is quite low. The drinking water is not enriched with fluorine, but the fluoride content in German drinking water is naturally present. In other countries (including parts of the USA), the concentration in the water from the tap is much higher. So if you live in Germany and take care not to ingest any additional fluoride, you are not in the danger zone. Also, fluorides are not used in the production of food in Germany, with the exception of labelled goods.

Fluorine was discovered in the 1930s as a means of protecting against tooth decay.
