In fact, it is theoretically possible to cook food under the bonnet, even if it's not exactly gourmet.

On long car journeys or in traffic jams, cooking on the car engine can even be a preferable alternative to bad fast food. Preparation is very simple and all you need is some aluminium foil.

How to cook food on the car engine

1 Firstly, decide what you want to cook. Almost anything can be cooked on the engine, as the car works in a similar way to a slow-cooking microwave oven. Sausages are particularly suitable as they are easy to wrap and cook quickly. Potatoes and vegetables are also easy to cook.

2. no matter what you want to cook, it must be well wrapped in aluminium foil so that it does not drip down. It is best to use several layers of foil. After all, you don't just want it to drip into the engine, you don't want it to get into the food. As long as the car has passed the last emissions test, there should be no problems in this respect either, as the exhaust fumes are usually channelled away from the engine to the rear.

3. find a suitable place under the bonnet, as high up as possible and not near the oil. The food should sit firmly and get as much heat as possible from the engine. Of course, the package must not restrict the functions of the car.

4 Once the food is in place, you should secure it so that it doesn't slide around if you want to cook while driving.

5 Now you can drive to heat up the engine. You should check as often as possible that your food is still in place. It is useful if you write down which food is cooking and for how long. Remember that the engine is cooled by the air when driving fast. This means that your food will cook faster in a traffic jam.

6 Check after about 15 minutes (depending on what is being cooked) whether the food is ready. You can test it by touching it or pricking it with a fork. The smell is usually also helpful. If the food is not ready yet, leave it in the motor for a while. The engine needs some time to cool down, so it will continue to cook even if the engine is switched off.

Don't forget that cooking under the bonnet should not become a habit in order to avoid health risks!

Tip: Ready meals in tins may take a while to warm up, but they are packaged beautifully and safely.

A car engine gets pretty hot, but does that mean it's suitable for cooking?
