It is all the more annoying to realise that electricity consumption in the home could be significantly lower if suitable measures were taken to reduce it.

Unfortunately, many people stick to these kinds of good intentions and not much changes in practice. However, it is not that difficult and involves little cost to significantly reduce monthly electricity bills and save several hundred euros over the year.

To achieve this, you first need to be aware of where heat and energy is escaping around the house and being wasted almost unused. Once you have recognised the weak points, you can take countermeasures to improve the situation.

Thermal insulation and insulation are the key words here if you want to make your home more energy-efficient. A house loses heat through the roof, windows and walls, but also through the floor, and a considerable amount is lost through heating.

In addition to thermal insulation, there are many other things you can do to save energy.

Ventilation

Daily ventilation is clearly a weak point. It should be limited to opening the windows all at the same time for up to 10 minutes in order to reduce energy consumption. Of course, this is especially true in the cold season when heating is required.

Air exchange is only effective if there is sufficient movement within the house or flat to exchange the air masses and replace the stale air with fresh air.

If the windows are left open for a while one after the other, sufficient air draught cannot be created and the desired effect is not achieved. If the windows remain open for too long, a lot of energy is wasted.

Leaving the windows open for longer than 10 minutes means that the walls of the home also cool down and the overall temperature drops. If the heating is switched on, it takes much longer to bring the temperature back up to the desired level, as it now has to heat up not only the air, but also the walls and furniture.

Household appliances

All appliances, such as washing machines, fridges, ovens, tumble dryers, freezers and dishwashers, are now labelled with an energy class, which uses the letters A-F to indicate how high the energy consumption of an appliance is.

When purchasing an appliance, it is therefore essential to ensure that it consumes as little energy as possible; the best level here is class A.

It also makes sense to adjust the appliance settings depending on the season; the refrigerator and freezer compartment do not have to cool at the same capacity in winter as in summer.

Consider whether the use of a tumble dryer is really necessary in spring or summer, or whether you can find a sunny spot for your laundry.

When purchasing such appliances, you should even consider whether you can share their use with other residents or family members.

In order to save energy, it is often necessary to simply rethink and give up habits that can often be traced back to pure convenience. This is where we all need to take control of ourselves.

Washing machine and dishwasher

It is rarely necessary to wash normally soiled laundry and dishes with long intensive programmes, e.g. with a prewash, low temperatures and a short wash cycle are usually just as efficient.

It goes without saying that these appliances should only be used when their capacity has been reached, but this is often disregarded.

It is more worthwhile buying a few more items of laundry or a few more plates and cutlery so that you have enough in stock for the next wash cycle than constantly running the machines with fewer items.
