Snakes<\/strong><\/p>\n There are two species of snake in Germany that are poisonous to humans and animals: the adder and the asp. The adder is widespread in Germany, but is becoming increasingly rare. With the exception of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, the adder lives everywhere, but only occasionally in North Rhine-Westphalia. The asp viper is only found in the Black Forest. Even if it happens rarely, a dog roaming through the forest may well be bitten by a snake. The venom of an adder is highly dosed, but the snake only has a small supply, so that a bite on pets is not necessarily fatal, depending on their size. The venom causes paralysis and can lead to respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest. The venom is relatively slow-acting, so immediate veterinary assistance can usually save the pet. <\/p>\n The venom of the Aspis viper is much weaker than that of the adder and therefore less dangerous for pets. <\/p>\n It is not possible to prevent a snake bite, but you can limit the risk and not let your pet roam freely in the wild in the relevant areas. If the animal is bitten, it should be kept still immediately and taken to the vet.<\/p>\n \n Raccoons<\/strong><\/p>\n Raccoons are becoming increasingly common in Germany, even in close proximity to humans. The main danger to pets is the transmission of diseases by raccoons. Raccoons are attracted by leftover food or pet food provided for the pet. The safest protection against raccoons is not to store rubbish outside and to feed your pet indoors.<\/p>\n \n Squirrel<\/strong><\/p>\n These cute little animals can become surprisingly aggressive if they are chased by a dog or cat. The squirrel has very sharp teeth, after all they serve as nutcrackers and can therefore leave deep wounds in the dog or cat. Squirrels never attack on their own, so injury to the pet can be prevented by keeping the animal outdoors under supervision or training it well.<\/p>\n \n Hedgehog<\/strong><\/p>\n Hedgehogs are harmless in themselves, but a dog snuffling in the leaves is occasionally bitten by a hedgehog or stung by the spines. The wound caused by the spines or bite is only dangerous if it becomes infected. To be on the safe side, an injured pet should therefore be treated by a vet. Any stuck hedgehog spines should be pulled out and disinfected.<\/p>\n \n Marten<\/strong><\/p>\n Martens are common almost everywhere in Germany and can become a nuisance in some areas. They are rodents and not only attack small animals, including rabbits, but can also damage objects. As a rule, dogs and cats are only attacked by martens if they feel threatened. However, small animals that roam freely in the garden occasionally fall victim to a marten. To avoid a marten bite, pets should therefore not be allowed to roam unsupervised in the wild.<\/p>\n \n Rats<\/strong><\/p>\n Wild rats are everywhere, in nature and in urban areas. They are tough, intelligent and aggressive. Nevertheless, a rat will tend to run away unless it is attacked. Again, the main danger is the transmission of disease.
