The Rococo art style emerged in France as a reaction to the era of Louis XIV, whose reign produced an art characterised by gravitas, dignity and pomp. After his death, people yearned for intimacy, lightness and elegance. <\/p>\n
In architecture, the Baroque and Rococo styles gradually merged. The Baroque buildings seemed too uniform and not very graceful for the new taste of the time, so the ground plans, forms and functions of architectural works of art were changed first. Buildings were no longer organised strictly according to the old order, but according to their function. Interior decoration became more important and more detailed. <\/p>\n
Whereas in the past the perfection of a building was determined by how uniformly the individual elements adhered to the order, in the Rococo period the building was judged by its overall effect. It was important that all the details came together to form a harmonious composition. The interiors were often characterised by intimacy and functionality. Again, you can see the exact contrast to the Baroque. In the Baroque period, monumentality and representation took centre stage, whereas in the Rococo period it was the unbound and intimate. <\/p>\n
Decorative art experienced a heyday. Every building detail became an ornament. Individual room elements were fluidly connected with each other using rocailles. The architectural proportions of buildings became more delicate.<\/p>\n
