The new architecture allowed for larger window areas and slender columns with the same structural stability. This stability was achieved by transferring the shear forces through buttresses and buttresses. The overall appearance of a Gothic building is weightless and elegant. Characteristic features are slender proportions, steeply rising verticals and dissolved wall surfaces.
The floor plan of the Gothic cathedral is in the shape of a Christian cross that stretches from west to east. The cathedral consists of three main parts: Nave, transept and choir. The central nave of the nave is built higher than the side aisles. The naves are separated by pointed arch arcades. As the thrust of the vault is diverted to the outside, large parts of the wall can be saved as a support, which is replaced by finely structured window areas. These window areas are decorated with Gothic stained glass.

The large windows allow more light to enter and are richly decorated with coloured glass. The exterior is similarly structured and strives upwards. Windows, portals and buttresses break up the compactness of the outer walls and create a delicately structured overall appearance.
