As rabbits are already sexually mature at the age of 3 months, it is useful to separate females from males early on, especially to avoid inbreeding. It is easiest to identify an adult male rabbit, but rabbits can be sexed at any age.<\/p>\n

To distinguish between male and female rabbits, turn the rabbits on their backs so that you can have a closer look at their genitals. It is best to ask a second person to hold the rabbit still.
In male rabbits you can clearly see the scrotums between the hind legs. The scrotums are only covered with skin, but are occasionally hidden between the rabbit's fur.
In very young rabbits or females, check the genital opening. Look for folds of skin under the flower (the stubby tail). Spread the folds apart to see the genital opening and the anus. In the female, the anus is closer to the flower.
