The smell is caused by the ash in the fireplace and tar oil that accumulates inside the fireplace. If you don't like this smell, you don't have to give up the fireplace, but you can reduce the odour.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThere are special logs for sale that are designed to remove soot from the fireplace. You place such a log on the fireplace, open the flue pipe and light it. These logs burn for between 60 and 90 minutes and have ingredients that remove the tar oil in the chimney.<br \/>When the logs have burnt out, their ashes should be swept away completely.<br \/>The grate of the fireplace should be removed and all ash residues accumulated on it wiped off. The ash should be placed in a fireproof container and disposed of only after it has cooled completely. <br \/>Meanwhile, open all windows and doors wide so that air exchange can take place. The heating should be turned off in the meantime to avoid wasting energy.
