You have almost certainly heard of Google, which is now probably the most popular search engine on the Internet. The makers of this search engine are constantly busy adding new services and options to their programmes.<\/p>\n

One service that has been boasting popularity recently is Google Earth. Earth is the English word for earth and refers to a programme that can be downloaded free of charge from the Internet, e.g. from the Google homepage.<\/p>\n

Google Earth is our earth in virtual form, a database fed by satellite images that provides a view of all places in the world.<\/p>\n

The Google Earth database is regularly expanded with more data and images are updated, so you can view large cities and regions in great detail, as if you had just set up binoculars and were pointing them at a building, a square, a street or a landmark.<\/p>\n

With Google Earth, even cars and people are visible, so be careful if you are about to do something that you want to keep secret, because it could soon be publicly visible to everyone if you happen to be outside your home. But don't worry, the satellite cannot look into flats and houses. It only records things that take place outdoors.<\/p>\n

In fact, most of the satellite images are not completely up-to-date, but in some cases several years old. Nevertheless, it has already happened that personal secrets have been revealed through Google Earth, such as that of an alleged former smoker who had taken up smoking again.<\/p>\n

Certain secret locations, such as military installations, are also protected and are not displayed or are blurred. Pessimists nevertheless see a certain danger in Google Earth for the machinations of terrorists and enemies of the state.<\/p>\n

Google Earth is particularly useful if you want to pay a virtual visit to friends or relatives who have settled far away, e.g. somewhere abroad.<\/p>\n

By far the most useful purpose for Google Earth can be found in the area of holidays and leisure, because here the programme can be used to check the spatial conditions and offers of hotels and holiday destinations. If the brochure entices you with a short walk to the white beach, you can take a realistic look at it before you actually book your holiday.<\/p>\n

Restaurants are also labelled as such, so Google Earth can even make a trip to the Yellow Pages superfluous, as you can select restaurants in this way and check the surrounding parking facilities at the same time.<\/p>\n

It's a great thing and the makers of Google Earth have long since realised that no place has to remain a no-man's land any longer. Even if you never actually travel to the most remote areas, you can now do so on your PC and awaken your spirit of discovery while leaving the environment and nature untouched.<\/p>\n
