Every household can buy such an appliance because the price is affordable.

Special crockery, usually made of plastic, which is specially designed for cooking, defrosting or heating in the microwave, has also become increasingly popular.

How safe is the microwave?

Although the majority of households still use the microwave for defrosting and reheating rather than cooking, it is still used. It is particularly practical if you don't have to transfer the food to other containers first, but can store it in one and the same container, from the freezer to the fridge to the microwave.

Nevertheless, there are doubts as to whether the crockery is safe and suitable for its purpose, as plastic harbours certain dangers. As the material is made from chemical substances, toxins can also get into the food, as heat triggers the release of the substances into the environment.

For a long time this was denied by manufacturers in the case of special microwave dishes and not confirmed by research, but now there are serious doubts and it has been decided to advise consumers not to use plastic microwave dishes, at least for baby and infant food, or even plastic bottles, for example for baby milk, which are not specially made for the microwave.

Under no circumstances should breast milk be heated in the microwave, as the heat destroys the nutrients it contains, even at low wattages.

Now you stand there and ask yourself what might be right. Microwave crockery has been classified and used for years as harmless, so does it make sense to ban it from the kitchen and replace it with glass containers?

As always, the decision is left to the consumer, as microwave dishes will of course not be withdrawn from the market. Reliable studies also seem to be a long time coming. So if in doubt, it is better to play it safe.

But other appliances have also been criticised in connection with the microwave. Grain pillows are now very popular for combating everything from niggles and aches to more serious complaints such as rheumatism. Retailers and manufacturers of various types of grain or core pillows advise, among other things, that the pillows should be heated in the microwave for a few minutes and then placed on top. The fact that this creates a fire hazard is probably news to the majority of users.

Fires have actually been caused by these pillows, and there are victims whose insurance companies do not want to pay because the microwave instructions for use (in some cases) contain references to these pillows and the risk of fire. But who studies the microwave instructions first when they have received recommendations and instructions on how to use them from the manufacturers and dealers of the pillows?

The insurance companies still classify this as negligent, although the behaviour should probably be labelled as bona fide.

The fact is that we should learn that although the microwave is a useful kitchen appliance, using it can be more treacherous than expected. We should therefore inform ourselves much better about the appliance and not trust vague guarantees from dubious sources.
