A tear in the abdominal muscles can be very painful and needs some time of rest to heal.

The abdominal wall consists of several muscles. The outer muscle, the rectus abdominis, is the muscle that you see in the form of a six-pack when you exercise your abdominals regularly. Outer and inner muscle strands run along the side of the abdominal wall.

An abdominal muscle torn during sporting activity is noticeable by restricted movement, muscle cramps, spasms and sharp pain. In addition, the muscle may swell slightly and become bloodshot, which usually occurs immediately after the injury and subsides relatively soon. People often confuse a torn abdominal muscle at first with an excessively strong muscle spasm.

Strains and tears of the abdominal muscles are divided into different categories. There are three stages that describe the degree of injury. Stage 1 is unpleasant restriction of movement with which one could still continue to train in the short term. The pain often only sets in when resting. In stage 2, you cannot do any activity that uses the abdominal muscles. The abdominal area hurts to the touch. In stage 3, even everyday movements are painful or even impossible until the abdominal muscles heal. The pain is accompanied by swelling and muscle spasm. Bruising may occur in the second and third stages, but not in the first.

To heal the abdominal muscle, one should give the muscles rest and limit oneself to the most necessary movements. The muscle can only heal as long as it is not moved. For the first 48 to 72 hours, cooling for about 20 minutes every few hours will help to reduce swelling. Beyond that, healing takes time. It is not advisable to take painkillers, as the pain motivates you to rest the muscle. If the pain is suppressed, it is too easy to make movements that can further injure the muscle.

To prevent muscle tears, warm up the muscles thoroughly by stretching before sport. Warmed-up muscles are more flexible and therefore do not tear as quickly under jerky strain.

Muscle fibres can tear during sports and gymnastics, especially if the muscles were not well warmed up.
