The lotus flower is associated with the human soul, gods and goddesses and is an important part of ancient legends. The spiritual significance of the lotus flower ranges from divine purity and enlightenment in Buddhism, prosperity in Hinduism to rebirth in Ancient Egypt. Many of these ancient meanings are still used today.

Egypt in Antiquity

The ancient Egyptians saw the lotus flower as a symbol of the sun and rebirth. The lotus flower plays a leading role in three different creation legends. The first legend says that the sun rose from a lotus flower that grew in a chaos of water. In another legend, a lotus flower with an earth globe rose from the infinite ocean Nun. The lotus flower blossomed and revealed the sun god Atum. In scripture, the lotus flower represented numbers, with one lotus flower representing the number 1000, and a bush with two flowers representing 2000. There are five different species of lotus, all belonging to the water lily family. Two belong to the Nelumbo family, three to Nymphaea. The white lotus, Nelumbo Nucifera, was the holy lotus for the Egyptians.

Buddhism

In Buddhism, the lotus flower symbolises purity of speech, mind and body, hovering above the waters of desire and attachment. Lotus is one of the eight symbols of happiness. Different colours of the flower represent different aspects of perfection. Red represents the heart, its purity, passion, love and compassion. White symbolises spiritual perfection and mental purity. Pink represents Buddha and is the highest lotus. Blue stands for wisdom, knowledge and victory over the senses.

Hinduism

In Hinduism, the lotus flower symbolises prosperity, beauty and eternal youth. As in Buddhism, it signifies purity and divinity. A lotus is often used to show a path in life. "He who performs his duty without attachment and submits to the High Lord, sinful behaviour does not affect him, just as the lotus leaf remains untouched by water." (Bhagavad Gita 5.10).

Lotuses also represent the chakras, the energy centres of the body.

In modern times, lotus flowers are still considered a symbol of purity and perfection, as well as interpretations within these meanings. Lotus tattoos represent life, new beginnings and the possibility of change. An Indian National Political Party (BJP) uses the lotus as an election symbol.

In vielen Kulturen besitzt die Lotusblume eine besondere Bedeutung und hat seit der Antike viele Völker beeinflusst, vom Alten Ägypten über Indien bis nach Asien.
