Unfortunately, there are some pests that frequently attack the rose bush. One of the first signs of pest infestation is the yellowish discolouration and wilting of the leaves. If the rose plant is not freed from the pests, it can die.

Rose mosaic virus is one of the most common viral infections that occur in roses. The disease causes irregularyellow spots on the leaves. The symptoms of the disease usually appear during the rapid growth phase. If left untreated, the disease leads to misshapen foliage, bent and reduced flowers and underdeveloped growth. An infected rose bush should be removed from other roses.

Star sooty mould is a fungal disease that causes yellowish and spotted leaves on roses. New spots appear within a few days. Infected leaves are usually shed by the plant. The plant is severely weakened by the fungal infection and can be damaged, especially in winter. Treatment involves spraying the rose with a fungicide. Infected parts should be cut off. All diseased plant parts below the plant on the ground should also be removed to prevent the fungus from re-entering the rose.

Powdery mildew causes yellowish discolouration of the leaves, white, mealy leaves, growth disorders and defoliation. The infection usually occurs at a temperature between 20 and 25 degrees. Warm, dry weather with cool night temperatures provide the right conditions for mildew to spread. About 10 days after infection, the rose already shows clear symptoms of the disease. Infected roses should be sprayed with a fungicide.

Leaf spot disease causes oval, brownish spots to form on the leaves. The discolouration progresses until the entire leaf turns yellow and falls off. Leaf spot disease usually occurs in spring. Wet weather allows the fungal bacteria to germinate and spread throughout the plant. Weekly treatments with a fungicide help to control the disease. In addition, the roses should be watered at the base of the roots and not on the leaves so as not to accelerate infection.

A rose bush is valued above all for its lush green leaves and colourful, fragrant flowers.
